CMU (Concrete Masonry Unit)

CMUs come in standard nominal sizes (commonly measuring 8x8x16 inches with mortar joints) and get stacked in running bond with mortar bed and head joints between courses, the same way brick does but at a larger scale. The hollow cores running through every block are what set CMU apart from a solid material: they let masons run vertical rebar and fill select cores with grout, which is why a CMU foundation or block wall can carry real structural load instead of just standing there as a barrier between two spaces. Standard CMU also comes in solid-face and split-face finishes, so the same structural block can be dressed up for an exposed retaining wall or left plain where it will be buried and never seen again. Because the block is manufactured to consistent dimensions, courses stack predictably and go up faster than comparable poured concrete forming, which matters on foundation and retaining wall jobs where schedule and weather windows both count.

We size the block, the grout fill, and the rebar spacing to the actual load and soil conditions on each site rather than defaulting to one spec for every job, since a wall holding back a steep Fancy Gap slope needs more reinforcement than a short garden wall in town.
