Block Wall

Block walls are laid up the same way brick walls are, course by course with mortar bed and head joints between each unit, but the larger block size means fewer joints and faster wall height for the same footprint of work. Where a block wall needs to hold back soil, carry a roof load, or stand as a foundation, we run rebar down the hollow cores and fill select cells with grout rather than leaving every cell open, turning what would otherwise be a stack of loose units into one connected structural system. A block wall can also be faced with brick or stone veneer afterward, so the structural work and the finished look don't have to be the same material. That flexibility is one reason block shows up so often in foundations, chimneys, and retaining walls where structure matters more than what the surface looks like once it's finished.

In Carroll County and Grayson County, block walls used as foundations or retaining structures sit at least partly below grade, where freeze-thaw cycling and frost heave put real, repeated pressure on the wall all winter long. A block wall built on a proper footing below the local frost line, with the right cells reinforced and grouted solid, holds its line for decades; one built without that reinforcement is the kind of wall we get called out to fix five or ten years later. We walk every site before we quote a block wall so the footing depth and reinforcement plan match what that particular slope and soil actually need, rather than pricing a generic wall off a phone call.
