A bond beam is a horizontal course of CMU block, filled solid with grout and reinforced with rebar, that ties a block wall together and distributes loads across its length.
Bond beams typically run at the top of a block wall, under window and door openings, or at set intervals up the wall height, using U-shaped bond beam block that creates a continuous open channel for horizontal rebar and grout to run the full length of the wall. That continuous reinforced band keeps the wall acting as one connected structure instead of a stack of individual units that can shift, rack, or crack independently of each other under load. A wall can have more than one bond beam depending on its height, tying the whole run of block together at multiple levels instead of relying on just the top course. Bond beams also give a wall a place to anchor other structural elements, like a ledger board or a beam bearing point, without relying on ordinary hollow block to carry that load.
On retaining walls and foundation walls in this region, a bond beam is one of the details that separates a wall built to actually resist lateral soil pressure and freeze-thaw movement from one that just looks solid from the street. Skipping it, or spacing bond beams too far apart, is a shortcut that doesn't show up as a problem until the wall has already been under stress for a few winters. We place bond beams where the engineering calls for them, not as an afterthought, and we tie the horizontal rebar in a bond beam into the vertical rebar running through the grouted cells below it, so the whole reinforcement system works as one connected cage rather than separate pieces.
