A walkway is a paved or masonry path, built from pavers, brick, flagstone, or poured concrete, that connects two points across a property for foot traffic.
A walkway is narrower than a patio but built the same way underneath, a compacted base, a bedding layer where pavers or flagstone are used, and grading that sheds water off to the side rather than letting it pool along the path. Material choice usually follows what's already on the house or patio so the two tie together visually instead of looking like separate, mismatched add-ons.
Narrow width doesn't mean lighter prep. A walkway with a thin or undercompacted base actually heaves faster than a wide patio does in a hard freeze, because there's less overall mass holding it flat, and an uneven, heaved walkway right at the front door or back steps becomes a trip hazard fast. We build walkway base depth the same way we would for a patio, not scaled down to save a step.
