Hardscape refers to the built, non-plant elements of a landscape, patios, walkways, retaining walls, fire pits, and outdoor kitchens, made from materials like brick, stone, pavers, or concrete.
Hardscape is the counterpart to softscape, which covers lawns, beds, and plantings. A hardscape project defines the usable, structural part of an outdoor space: where people walk, sit, cook, and gather. Because these elements are permanent and load-bearing in ways plantings aren't, they depend on the same fundamentals as any masonry work, a properly prepared base, correct grading so water moves away instead of pooling, and materials matched to how heavily the space gets used and how it ties into the house's existing brick, stone, or siding.
In the Blue Ridge foothills, hardscape has to survive a hard freeze-thaw cycle every winter, not just look good in July. A patio or walkway built on a shallow, poorly compacted base will heave and crack within a season or two once water gets underneath it, freezes, and expands. That's why we build every hardscape project, whether it's brick, stone, or paver, on a base and drainage plan sized for this climate, not a generic spec pulled off a shelf.
