A mortared patio is a patio where flagstone, brick, or paver units are set in a mortar bed over a concrete slab or footing and the joints between them are filled solid with mortar, creating one rigid surface instead of individual pieces.
Building a mortared patio means setting each stone or unit into a bed of mortar over a solid slab, then filling and tooling the joints solid rather than leaving them open with sand. The result is a tight, formal look with a flush, continuous surface, and it holds up well under features like an outdoor kitchen or fireplace hearth where a rigid, load-bearing surface underfoot is what's actually needed rather than a flexible one.
Because a mortared patio behaves as one connected piece, the concrete slab or footing underneath has to be built correctly the first time, poured to the right depth with reinforcement suited to the site and soil. If that base isn't sized for freeze-thaw movement, the whole surface cracks together as a unit instead of individual stones shifting independently the way they would on a dry-laid patio, and the crack is much harder to hide.
