A gravity wall is a retaining wall that holds back soil using nothing but its own mass and weight, without geogrid reinforcement or engineered footings tied into the slope behind it.
Gravity walls work because enough stacked material, whether that's large stone, heavy segmental block, or poured concrete, simply weighs enough to resist the soil pushing against it. No steel, no mesh, just mass and friction doing the job. That makes them a practical choice for shorter walls carrying a moderate soil load, but the same limitation means a gravity wall runs out of capacity fast as height increases. Past a certain point the design needs geogrid or a different approach entirely, because mass alone can't out-muscle the pressure of a full hillside pushing against it.
We build a lot of gravity walls out of natural stone across Carroll and Grayson County properties, letting batter and the stone's own weight do the structural work without extra reinforcement. The tradeoff is that a gravity wall still needs proper drainage aggregate behind it, the same as any reinforced wall. Skip that step and freeze-thaw cycles in the foothills will load the wall with ice pressure it was never designed to carry, no matter how much stone is stacked in front of it, and a wall built without that safeguard tends to show problems within a few winters rather than decades.
