Natural Stone

Natural stone gets used two different ways in masonry: full-bed, where the stone carries real structural weight in a wall or foundation, or veneer, where thinner cut pieces face a wall for looks without bearing load. Because it's the actual mineral, whether that's granite, sandstone, or local fieldstone, natural stone won't fade or chip through to a different color the way a manufactured product can, and each piece is genuinely one of a kind, which gives a wall texture that's hard to fake. Sourcing, cutting, and hauling real stone takes more work than pouring a manufactured product, which is part of why natural stone jobs vary so much from one property to the next, and why the mason's experience sorting and fitting the material matters as much as the material itself.

The Blue Ridge foothills have plenty of local fieldstone pulled from creek beds and old farm fields around Carroll and Grayson County, and it's held up in area walls and chimneys for generations. Properly bedded and drained, natural stone handles freeze-thaw winters well because the stone itself is dense and doesn't absorb much water, but the mortar and drainage around it still have to be done right or the wall fails around the stone, not because of it. That's the pattern we see most often on older stonework in this area: the stone itself is usually fine after decades outside, it's the joints and the base underneath it that give out first. When we're asked to repair rather than replace a piece of old stonework, it's almost always the mortar or the footing that failed, not the stone.
