A gravity wall holds back soil purely through its own weight and mass, typically built from large stone or heavy blocks stacked with a slight backward lean, or batter, into the hillside. A segmental retaining wall uses smaller, interlocking manufactured blocks that lock together course by course, and for taller walls, ties back into the soil with layers of geogrid for reinforcement. Gravity walls suit shorter, simpler slopes; segmental systems scale up to taller walls because the geogrid does the structural work the wall's own weight can't do alone.
A gravity wall relies entirely on mass and friction. Heavy stone or block stacked with a backward batter uses its own weight to resist the soil pushing against it, which is why gravity walls are practical up to a certain height and then become impractical, since the wall would need to get disproportionately thick and heavy to keep holding taller and taller soil loads. Past that point, a gravity wall stops being a cost-effective way to solve the problem, even before it becomes an engineering problem.
Segmental retaining walls use lighter, standardized concrete blocks with an interlocking lip or pin system that keeps each course aligned with the one below it. Beyond a certain height, these systems add geogrid, a reinforcing mesh laid horizontally back into the compacted soil behind the wall, which anchors the wall face to the soil mass itself rather than relying only on the block's weight. That's what lets segmental walls go taller than a gravity wall of similar footprint.
Both types need proper drainage behind them, since trapped water and freeze-thaw pressure are what actually take down most retaining walls in this region, not the soil load itself.
