A retaining wall bulges when the soil and water pressure behind it exceeds what the wall's weight, footing, and drainage were built to resist, pushing the wall face outward, usually most visibly somewhere in the lower half of the wall. The most common causes are saturated soil from poor or blocked drainage, a footing that wasn't set deep or wide enough, or added weight on the slope above like fill dirt, a driveway, or a structure the wall was never designed to carry.
A wall stays flat as long as its weight, footing, and any reinforcement can resist the lateral push of the soil behind it at every point along its height. Once that push exceeds what a section of the wall can resist, that section deflects outward instead of staying in place, which shows up as a bulge rather than the whole wall failing at once. It's a localized sign that the pressure and the wall's resistance are out of balance right there.
In the Blue Ridge foothills, freeze-thaw cycling adds to that pressure. Saturated soil behind a wall that isn't draining properly freezes in cold snaps and expands, adding force on top of the hydrostatic pressure that's already pushing, then that cycle repeats through the winter. On a slope that already drains poorly, that repeated cycling can push a bulge a little further out each winter rather than it staying put.
Once bulging is visible, the wall has usually already moved past what it can safely resist at that point. When we assess a bulging wall, we're looking at drainage, footing depth, and the soil behind that section before deciding how much of the wall actually needs to come out and get rebuilt with the drainage and support it should have had from the start.
