CMU block (concrete masonry unit, essentially standard concrete block) is generally less expensive in material cost than poured concrete for foundation walls, since it doesn't require the forms, pump trucks, and curing time a poured wall needs. Labor costs can offset some of that difference, and the final choice often comes down to the specific structure, soil conditions, and local requirements rather than material cost alone. Because every site is different, the real number for a specific foundation only comes from a written estimate after we look at the job.
Poured concrete foundations use temporary forms filled with wet concrete that cures into a single continuous wall, which gives strong resistance to soil pressure and water without the joint lines a block wall has. CMU walls are built from individual hollow concrete blocks stacked in courses and mortared together, with rebar and grout often added inside the block cavities (grouted cells) for added strength, especially in taller or load-bearing applications. Both approaches are common in this region, and the right one depends on more than which is cheaper on paper.
The material and labor tradeoffs run in different directions. CMU block doesn't need forms or a concrete pump, and installation can proceed course by course without waiting on a full pour to cure, which often keeps labor more predictable. Poured concrete needs fewer joints for water to work through over time, which matters in a climate with hard freeze-thaw cycles, but the formwork and pump equipment add cost of their own. Site access, soil type, and wall height all shift which option actually comes out ahead on a given project.
