The exact lifespan depends less on the block itself and more on drainage performance, soil conditions, and how well the base was prepared before the first course ever went in.
Segmental block walls don't rely on mortar bonds the way brick or stone masonry does. They stay in place through interlocking geometry, friction, gravity, and geogrid reinforcement where the wall is tall enough to need it. That means the wall's long-term performance hinges almost entirely on whether the base stays stable and the drainage zone keeps relieving water pressure behind it, not on joints failing the way they might in mortared masonry.
The block units themselves are manufactured to hold up to freeze-thaw cycling, which matters in this climate, but a segmental wall's actual lifespan here still comes down to whether water is getting trapped behind it and freezing repeatedly. A well-drained segmental wall handles the Blue Ridge foothills' freeze-thaw exposure far better than one with a clogged, undersized, or missing drainage system.
