Retaining walls need drainage because they hold back soil that fills with water after rain and snowmelt, and without a way for that water to escape, hydrostatic pressure builds up behind the wall and pushes it forward until it cracks, bulges, or fails. A drainage system, gravel backfill, weep holes, and drain pipe give that water somewhere to go so it never gets the chance to push.
Soil holds a lot of water when it's saturated, and water is heavy. A retaining wall is engineered to hold back a certain amount of soil pressure, but if that soil turns to wet mud with nowhere to drain, the load behind the wall goes up fast and starts working against joints, footings, and the wall's ability to stay put. That's hydrostatic pressure, and it's the single biggest reason well-built walls fail early.
Up here in the Blue Ridge foothills that problem gets worse in winter. Water trapped behind a wall doesn't just add weight, it freezes. Ice takes up more room than liquid water, so a wall fighting hydrostatic pressure all fall gets hit with expansion pressure on top of that all winter, cycle after cycle, every time the temperature swings back through freezing.

That means crushed stone backfill behind the wall face, a perforated drain pipe at the base, and an outlet that actually moves water away from the site instead of just letting it pool.
