How Does Frost Heave Crack a Foundation?

The primary defense is footing depth below the local frost line, since ground below that depth doesn't experience the freeze-thaw swings that cause heave. Good drainage away from the foundation matters too, since less water available to freeze means less pressure even in marginal conditions or unusual soil.
