Can you build a masonry outdoor kitchen?

Quick answer

Yes, Chelo's Brick & Stone builds masonry outdoor kitchens as part of our hardscapes work, from the block core and countertop to the brick or stone facing. Each one is built to hold up outside year-round, not assembled from prefab panels.

An outdoor kitchen starts with a structural core, usually CMU block, built to the layout of whatever appliances are going in: grill, side burner, refrigerator, storage. That core gets faced with brick or stone to match the rest of the patio or house, and topped with a countertop material that can handle direct sun, rain, and winter freeze without cracking.

Because it's outside full-time, an outdoor kitchen in the Blue Ridge foothills needs the same freeze-thaw thinking as any exterior masonry: a proper footing, facing material rated for severe outdoor exposure, and joints tooled so water sheds instead of soaking in and freezing behind the veneer. We also coordinate the gas, electrical, and plumbing rough-in with the appropriate trades before the block core gets closed up.

We usually build these as part of a larger patio or hardscape project so the outdoor kitchen, seating, and any fireplace or fire pit all sit on one connected footing and drainage plan instead of getting added piecemeal over separate projects.

Frequently asked questions

Do you install the grill and appliances, or just build the structure?
We build the masonry structure and coordinate the rough-in openings, appliance installation itself is usually handled by whoever supplies that equipment or a licensed trade for gas and electrical.
Does an outdoor kitchen need to be covered in the winter?
A cover or roof helps protect appliances and countertop material, though the masonry structure itself is built to handle exposure year-round.
