An outdoor kitchen starts with a structural core, usually CMU block, built to the layout of whatever appliances are going in: grill, side burner, refrigerator, storage. That core gets faced with brick or stone to match the rest of the patio or house, and topped with a countertop material that can handle direct sun, rain, and winter freeze without cracking.
Because it's outside full-time, an outdoor kitchen in the Blue Ridge foothills needs the same freeze-thaw thinking as any exterior masonry: a proper footing, facing material rated for severe outdoor exposure, and joints tooled so water sheds instead of soaking in and freezing behind the veneer. We also coordinate the gas, electrical, and plumbing rough-in with the appropriate trades before the block core gets closed up.
We usually build these as part of a larger patio or hardscape project so the outdoor kitchen, seating, and any fireplace or fire pit all sit on one connected footing and drainage plan instead of getting added piecemeal over separate projects.
