Yes. Tree roots can damage a retaining wall by growing into existing joints and cracks and prying them wider as the root thickens, by disrupting the compacted soil and drainage layer behind the wall, or by adding weight and lateral force as a large tree grows too close to or right on top of the wall. The closer a tree sits to a wall and the bigger it gets, the more likely its root system eventually causes a problem.
Roots follow moisture and the path of least resistance, and the loosened, well-drained backfill behind a retaining wall is often exactly that. Once roots establish themselves there, they keep expanding as the tree matures, and that expansion pushes against the wall from behind or wedges directly into existing joints and cracks, widening them slowly over years rather than all at once.
A lot of walls we build sit on wooded hillside lots throughout this area, and it's common for a wall that had plenty of clearance from a young tree when it went in to end up with a root problem a couple decades later once that tree matures. Walls built with tight clearance to existing trees to begin with tend to run into this sooner.
When we're assessing damage on an existing wall, checking whether roots are a contributing cause is part of that walkthrough, because a repair done without addressing an active root nearby usually doesn't hold. Depending on how established the roots are, the fix might involve root management, not just wall repair.
