A cracked crown by itself doesn't start a fire. The fire risk comes indirectly: water gets past the crack, works into the flue liner and the brick around it, and over time that can crack or separate the liner, which is the barrier keeping heat and embers away from the combustible parts of the house. A damaged flue liner is the actual fire hazard, and a failed crown is one of the most common ways a liner ends up damaged.
The flue liner does the fire-safety work inside a chimney. It contains the heat, sparks, and byproducts of combustion and keeps them away from the surrounding masonry and any wood framing near the chimney. Water intrusion from a cracked crown soaks into the space between the liner and the brick, freezes in winter, and can crack clay tile liners or corrode a metal liner over repeated cycles until the liner is no longer doing its job.
This is a slower process than most people picture. A crown that cracked last fall doesn't cause a fire this winter. But left unaddressed through several freeze-thaw seasons in the Blue Ridge foothills, water damage compounds year over year, and a liner that was sound five years ago can develop gaps that let heat reach masonry joints or nearby framing it was never meant to touch.
This is exactly why we treat a cracked crown as a priority repair rather than something to watch and wait on. Fixing the crown while it's still just a crown problem is straightforward. Waiting until it's also a liner problem means an inspection to check liner condition, and possibly a liner repair or replacement on top of the crown work that could have prevented it.
