Type N Mortar

Definition

Type N mortar is a medium-strength, general-purpose mortar mix, around 750 psi, used for above-grade exterior walls, chimneys, and most residential brick and stone construction.

Type N is the general-purpose, medium-strength mortar most masons reach for by default, with a compressive strength around 750 psi. It's strong enough to bond brick and block for standard above-grade walls, but flexible enough to absorb minor settling and thermal movement without transferring stress into the masonry units themselves. It's the standard mix for exterior brick veneer, chimneys, and most residential walls that aren't carrying unusual structural load or sitting below grade.

That flexibility is exactly why Type N shows up so often on chimneys and exterior walls in the Blue Ridge foothills. A harder mortar resists the constant expansion and contraction of freeze-thaw winters less gracefully, cracking instead of flexing, and that cracking is often where water gets in and starts the spalling process on the brick itself. On most of the chimney and wall repointing we do around Hillsville and Galax, Type N is the match for the original mortar.
