A stair-step crack is a diagonal crack that zigzags up through the mortar joints of a brick or block wall in a stair-like pattern instead of running straight through the brick, and it almost always points to movement in the foundation or footing below.
Mortar is softer than brick, so when a wall is under stress the crack follows the path of least resistance: up a head joint, across a bed joint, up the next head joint, and so on. That stepped path is what separates it from a random hairline crack. Because it tracks the joint pattern instead of shattering brick, a stair-step crack usually signals the foundation under one section of wall is settling, heaving, or shifting relative to the rest of the structure, not just surface weathering.
In the Blue Ridge foothills we see stair-step cracks most on walls above footings that weren't poured deep enough or that sit over fill soil that wasn't compacted right, because uneven ground movement pulls one part of the wall down while the rest holds. Freeze-thaw cycles make it worse each winter, since heaving and settling ground rarely move back to exactly where it started. A stair-step crack that's widening, that you can slide a coin into, or that shows up on both the inside and outside of the wall needs a mason's eyes on it, not a tube of caulk.
