Restoration mortar is a mortar mix formulated to match the strength, permeability, and appearance of the original mortar in a historic structure, usually lime-based rather than heavy in Portland cement, so it doesn't overpower the older brick or stone it's repairing.
Modern mortar is built for strength, high Portland cement content that cures hard and holds up under today's brick, which is fired harder than it used to be. Historic brick wasn't made to handle that. Restoration mortar dials the cement back and brings the lime content up, producing a mix that's softer and more breathable, closer to what a mason would have used decades or a century ago. Getting that ratio right takes testing the existing mortar, not guessing off a bag label.
We see this most on chimneys and foundation walls on older properties around Hillsville and Galax, structures built long before bagged mortar mixes were standardized. Southwest Virginia's freeze-thaw cycle punishes any mismatch quickly. Use the wrong restoration mortar and the repair looks fine for a season, then the brick around it starts spalling because the new mortar is holding water in instead of letting it move through and out.
