A repointing match is new mortar work formulated and tooled to match the color, sand texture, joint width, and profile of the surrounding original mortar, so a repointed section blends into the wall instead of reading as an obvious patch.
Getting a repointing match right takes more than picking a mortar color close to the old joints. Sand type and color, joint width, and how the joint is tooled, concave, flush, or weathered, all affect how the finished repair reads next to original work. Mortar strength has to line up too, since a hard patch dropped into soft old joints creates a weak point right at the edges of the repair instead of solving the problem.
A lot of repointing match work is spot repair, redoing failed sections on a chimney or a street-facing wall rather than a whole structure, so blending matters more than it would on a full rebuild. On brick that's been through decades of Blue Ridge winters, the mortar has usually weathered and lightened, and matching that look while still using a mortar mix that's structurally right for the brick underneath is the real trick.
