Polymeric sand is a blended sand and polymer binder swept into the joints between pavers and then activated with water, locking the pavers in place and resisting weed growth and washout.
Once pavers are set, polymeric sand gets swept into the joints, compacted, and misted with water, which activates the polymer and binds the sand grains into a semi-rigid joint. That joint helps hold each paver in position, keeps loose jointing sand from washing out in heavy rain, and makes it harder for weeds and ants to establish themselves between the pavers. It's applied over bedding sand and does not replace the paver base underneath, and it isn't a structural layer on its own.
Polymeric sand isn't a substitute for a properly built base and edge restraint. Repeated freeze-thaw cycling and years of moisture can gradually break down even a well-installed joint over time, but that process happens far faster on a patio where the base underneath was never compacted correctly in the first place. That's why we don't treat joint sand as the fix for a poorly built surface, it's the finishing step, not the foundation.
