A mortar bed joint is the horizontal layer of mortar spread beneath each course of brick, block, or stone that beds the unit level and transfers weight down to the course below.
The bed joint is what a mason levels and plumbs each course against, and its thickness (commonly around three-eighths of an inch in standard brick and block work) has to stay consistent all the way up the wall, or the courses drift out of level and the finished wall looks and performs poorly. Full, solid bed joints matter structurally too, since a bed joint with hollow spots or voids concentrates the weight of the wall unevenly instead of spreading it, and that creates weak points nobody sees until the wall is under real stress. Getting bed joint thickness right also keeps course height consistent, which matters when a wall has to line up with windows, doors, or an existing structure. The mortar type used in the bed joint has to match the unit it's supporting too, since a mortar that's harder than an older, softer brick can end up doing more damage to the brick than good.
In freeze-thaw climates like this one, a bed joint that isn't packed completely full gives water a direct path into the wall, and once that water freezes and expands inside the joint, it accelerates mortar failure and can crack the units sitting above it. We fill bed joints solid across their entire width, not just enough to look clean from the finished face, because what's hidden in that joint is what determines how long the wall actually lasts. A wall can look perfectly tooled on the surface and still be failing from voids nobody can see without opening the joint back up, which is exactly why we check bed joints closely on every repointing evaluation.
