Load-Bearing Wall

Definition

A load-bearing wall carries structural weight from the roof, floors, or upper walls down to the foundation, unlike a partition wall, which only divides space and carries no load beyond its own.

Knowing which walls are load-bearing matters before any significant repair, because cutting into or removing one without proper temporary support, a new header, or an engineered lintel can let the structure above it sag or crack. In masonry work this comes up when repointing turns into a partial rebuild, or when an opening needs to be widened, since the wall's load path has to be respected or replaced before anything gets removed.

In many older homes in this region, the exterior brick or stone wall is the actual load-bearing structure rather than a veneer layer over a wood frame, which changes how a repair or a rebuild gets approached compared to newer brick-veneer construction, where the load runs through the framing behind the brick instead of the brick itself. Confirming which type of wall you have is one of the first things worth checking before planning any major work.
