A paver patio sinks or shifts because the compacted base underneath it settles, erodes, or heaves, not because the pavers themselves fail. Once that base moves, the individual pavers ride along with it, creating dips, waves, or gaps at the joints. In the Blue Ridge foothills, repeated freeze-thaw cycles and poor drainage are the most common causes of that base failure.
Pavers are a rigid surface sitting on a flexible system, and all the structural work happens below them. A layer of compacted aggregate base carries the weight and spreads it out over the soil underneath. If that base wasn't compacted in proper layers down to a stable depth, or if it sat on loose fill instead of undisturbed or properly compacted soil, it keeps compressing under the weight of the pavers, foot traffic, and furniture for years after installation. The pavers themselves rarely crack or crumble. They just follow the ground beneath them down.
Water is the other half of the problem. If a patio doesn't slope away from the house toward somewhere for water to go, it pools on top of or seeps into the base. Up here in the Blue Ridge foothills, that trapped water freezes and expands all winter, lifting sections of the base unevenly, then letting them settle back down slightly differently each thaw. Do that every winter for years and low spots, waves, and gaps between pavers show up gradually, usually worst near downspouts, low corners, or anywhere water naturally collects.
When we get called out to look at a sinking or shifting patio, we're really diagnosing the base, not the pavers. We dig down to see how deep the aggregate base actually goes, whether it was compacted properly, and where water is getting in and pooling. On new installs we excavate to a stable depth, compact the base in the right layers, and grade the whole patio to shed water instead of holding it, which is what keeps this from happening in the first place.
