A chimney stands above the roofline into open wind, which means it takes the hardest hit from wind-driven rain and snow of any masonry on the house, and it swings temperature fast on the flue side while the outside face stays cold, so it goes through more extreme thermal cycling than a wall at ground level. In the mountains those effects are magnified, since wind speeds are higher at elevation and the swing between sun, shade, and cold night air happens more often.
A chimney is exposed on all four sides with nothing sheltering it the way a wall gets sheltered by roof overhang, landscaping, or a neighboring structure. Its flat top, the crown, catches more direct rain and snow than almost any other surface on the house and has to shed that water fast or it sits and soaks in. Wind at height pushes rain sideways into mortar joints a ground-level wall would never see driven into it the same way, and that sideways-driven moisture is exactly the kind a lot of standard flashing details aren't built to handle.
Elevation adds wind exposure on top of that, since open ridges and hilltop sites see stronger, steadier wind than sheltered valley lots. There's also a temperature effect specific to chimneys: warm flue gases heat the inside of the masonry in winter while the outside face stays exposed to freezing air, which creates a temperature differential a plain wall doesn't deal with, and that differential can add condensation inside the chimney on top of the moisture already hitting it from outside.
