Repointing is the structural repair of removing deteriorated mortar from joints and packing in new mortar to keep a wall weathertight and sound. Tuckpointing is a decorative technique that uses two mortar colors: a base mortar tinted to match the brick, with a thin, precise contrasting line pressed into it to create the illusion of fine, uniform joints. In everyday conversation people often use the two words interchangeably, but true tuckpointing is cosmetic work, not a repair method on its own.
The confusion comes from history. Tuckpointing started in England as a way to make common, roughly laid brick look like the expensive, hand-cut brick reserved for wealthier buildings. Masons would lay a base mortar close to the brick's own color, then cut a narrow groove and fill it with a bright, precise lime putty line, creating crisp shadow lines that read as tight, uniform joints from a distance. It was decoration layered on top of ordinary brickwork, not a fix for failing mortar. That's why you'll see the term used loosely today for any mortar repair, even where no decorative line is involved.
Repointing, by contrast, is maintenance. When mortar between bricks cracks, crumbles, or washes out, water gets behind it, and up here that water freezes and thaws all winter, which pries the joint apart faster every season. Repointing means grinding out the old, damaged mortar to a consistent depth, deep enough that the new mortar has something solid to bond to, and packing in fresh mortar matched to the brick's age and hardness, so the wall sheds water the way it's supposed to again. Skipping that grinding step and just smearing new mortar over the old is a shortcut that rarely lasts, since the new material never bonds properly to what's left behind it.
