On a sloped site, the best base is still a compacted aggregate base, but it has to be built in level, stepped sections cut into the grade rather than laid at a constant angle, with drainage planned so water is directed off the patio instead of running across or pooling against it. How much stepping and retaining is needed depends on how steep the slope actually is.
On flat ground the base is a fairly simple compacted layer sloped gently for drainage. On a slope, you either terrace the patio into level sections, sometimes with a low retaining edge holding the uphill side, or excavate deeper on the downhill side to create a level pad. Either way, the base gets cut into stable, existing soil rather than built up on loose fill, since fill on a slope is exactly the kind of material that keeps settling under a patio.
A lot of yards around Hillsville, Galax, and Fancy Gap have real grade to them, and a sloped base that isn't cut and compacted correctly is exactly where you see the worst freeze-thaw movement, because water running downhill through a poorly built base has nowhere to drain out to. That's the difference between a slope handled well and one that turns into a recurring problem every winter.
We walk the actual slope on site before deciding on stepping, wall height, or drainage routing, rather than using one generic approach on every sloped yard. When the drop is more than the patio base alone can handle safely, we coordinate a retaining wall into the plan to hold the grade instead of trying to force the patio base to do that job.
