Look for the work area, the work proposed, the materials, the price and the expected completion date in writing. Then check the exclusions and unanswered questions. Those details let you tell whether two estimates describe the same masonry job. An estimate's title alone does not tell you whether its price can change; ask the contractor to explain the terms actually offered.
Start with the part of the property you can point to. A proposal for one section of brickwork is different from a proposal for the whole wall. Copy the actual location and extent of work from the document. If it says only 'repair masonry,' ask which area that means before comparing the total with another estimate.
Next, look at the material description. Does it identify what is being retained and what would be supplied? If a particular color, finish or product matters to you, ask how that choice will be recorded. A photograph you like is useful conversation material, but it is not a written product selection or a promise of an exact match.
Keep preparation and cleanup visible. Ask whether removal of existing material, work-area access, protection of adjacent surfaces and disposal are included, excluded or still undecided. These are comparison categories, not a statement that every masonry job needs the same preparation. Write 'not stated' beside an omission rather than assuming the answer.
Virginia's DPOR consumer guide recommends written estimates, explanations for price variations and written promises. On the documents in front of you, ask which work, materials, price and completion date are actually described. Keep the original description beside later questions. If someone proposes a different work area or material, ask for the revised scope and any price or timing effect in writing.
