Hairline cracks in stone veneer usually come from movement or trapped moisture behind the panel, not from the stone itself giving out. The framing or substrate the veneer is attached to expands, contracts, or settles slightly with temperature and moisture changes, and since a veneer panel is thin and rigid, even small movement behind it shows up as a fine surface crack instead of bending unnoticed.
Stone veneer is bonded to a substrate, whether that's a scratch coat over wire lath, a wood-framed wall, or a block foundation, and that substrate doesn't stay perfectly still. Wood framing flexes seasonally, block and concrete can develop tiny settlement movement, and all of that gets transferred up into the rigid veneer layer above it. Because the stone and mortar can't flex the way the framing does, the stress often shows as a crack rather than a bend.
Water trapped behind the panel adds another mechanism entirely. If moisture gets behind the veneer through a gap in flashing or a missed seal and then freezes, that ice expands against the back of a thin panel the same way it does inside brick, which can crack a veneer panel from behind even though the front looks fine at first.
