Is Brick Veneer as Strong as Solid Brick?

Solid masonry construction, common in older homes, stacks two or more wythes (vertical layers) of brick together, sometimes tied with header courses, so the brick wall itself is load-bearing. Almost all new residential construction today uses brick veneer instead: a single wythe of brick tied back to a wood-framed or steel-framed wall with metal ties, with the actual structural work done by the frame behind it. This shift happened decades ago as building methods changed, so most homes built in the past several decades in this region are veneer rather than solid masonry.

That doesn't make veneer inferior. The brick units themselves are the same material, and a properly built veneer wall includes an air gap, a drainage plane, flashing, and weep holes so any water that gets past the brick face can drain back out instead of soaking into the framing. What fails veneer walls isn't the brick, it's usually a missing or damaged weep hole, bad flashing, or mortar bridging the drainage gap, which lets water sit against the wood frame behind it.
