Do you build masonry mailboxes and columns?

Quick answer

Yes, Chelo's Brick & Stone builds masonry mailboxes, driveway entrance columns, and gate posts in brick or stone. They're smaller jobs than a wall or patio, but they still get a real footing below the frost line so they don't heave, lean, or crack apart over time.

A masonry mailbox or column looks simple, but the same physics that affect a full retaining wall apply to it on a smaller scale. Without a footing set below the frost line, water in the surrounding soil freezes and expands each winter and slowly pushes a shallow post out of plumb. We set every column and mailbox on a proper footing, the same way we would on a bigger project.

Most of these get built to match something else on the property, brick that echoes the house's brick, or stone that ties into a retaining wall or patio nearby. We can run conduit through the column during construction if you want a light fixture or house numbers built in, that has to be planned before the masonry goes up, not after.

These are often one of the smaller, stand-alone jobs we take on, a single mailbox column or a matched pair at a driveway entrance. There's no project too small to get a proper footing and a straight, plumb build.

Frequently asked questions

Can a masonry column include a light fixture or house numbers?
Yes, but the conduit and mounting hardware need to be planned and run before the block or brick goes up, not added afterward.
How wide does a driveway entrance need to be for two columns?
That depends on your driveway and the vehicles using it. We measure the actual driveway and turning radius on site before setting column locations.
